Holly

Yesterday Mum and I took my cousin Elysia on her birthday outing. We went to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. Although it's not the best time of year to see the gardens, Mum and I still found plenty of interest, and she enjoyed the temperate house (palm trees!) and the skating rink outside it.

For me, the highlight was the Holly Walk, a long stretch of pathway flanked by different varieties of holly, most of which were heavily berried. Inevitably, I took a fair few pictures, some of which I've turned into seasonal icons. Feel free to steal/modify etc - I just thought this was a fun way to show off a whole range of varieties without spamming you with big pictures.

One and two are quotes from The Holly and the Ivy and three is from Southey's poem The Holly Tree

EEEEEEEEEE! Pretty! ^-^ They're gorgeous. I think we have the first type of holly in our garden, but I'm not sure.

Happy Sunday!

I think that's the most common sort, although it had smooth leaves rather than prickly ones. I didn't have time to slow down and note the names of the species, sadly.

It was lovely to see them all stretched out along the path.

Those are lovely--nice way of showing them, too! The variagated kinds are quite striking.
Pity we can't grow them out here; the winters are too cold. Well, back when we actually had winters, anyway. *grumblemutter*

Thanks for sharing!

That's a shame - I love holly. The building opposite mine has a whole hedge of variegated holly - it looks lovely.

*sighs* Your winters still beat ours. I'm hoping this year's won't be as long and soggy as last time.

Oo, pretty! My favorites are the ones with leaves that are two shades of green. Pretty pretty ^_^

Thank you :) Aren't they gorgeous - I spent ages looking at them. I love holly.
