1. Devon and squirrels for
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
A squirrel ran up the next tree, its claws scrabbling. Devon sighed softly, and resettled himself on his branch. Below him the road was empty, stretching through the forest.
Above, Nimbus and Maria rode the wind, watching for the Dark. He waited for their signal to move forward, casting the spell-web onto the land so the legion could follow.
The Dark could lurk beneath the shade of the branches, or burn the sky.
They flew, knowing the risk. He would follow, not merely for the triumph of the Light, but for the Ninth, for the scouts, for Nimbus, for Maria.
2. Thunderstorms, Sphinx and Nimbus for
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Outside the tower, lightning speared across the skies above Darkholm, making the pages in front of Sirini flash white. She saw the outline of black wings and a beseeching smile.
Then the thunder roared over her, making the candle quiver.
In the frame of the window, Jethavi stood, the wind blowing her blood-bright hair away from her face. With each flash of lightning, she seemed to glow, pale eyes silvery.
Sirini’s fingers clenched on her pen.
When, at last, the storm faded, Jethavi turned back into the room. “What are you studying?”
“Enemies,” said Sirini, and finally turned the page.
3. Mobile phone, plastic spork and goat for
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
There was a goat on Shadowhunter’s bridge. A large, white goat, currently trying to chew its way out of a tether made of data cables. Behind the goat, her chief engineer was scowling at the floor.
There was a spork stuck to his forehead.
Tiger looked at her exec. Riala beamed back, green wings twitching.
“Captain! Our mission was successful! We have retrieved the communications device!”
“Where is it?”
“There was one, ah, minor setback.”
“Where’s my data?”
Riala’s wings sagged. She glanced at Chief Yately.
He stopped tugging at the spork for a moment to snap, “In the goat.”
4. Young Emli, fiberglass, thermocouple, and something sonic powered for
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Rosie knew it was going to be a bad lesson when Emli drifted out of the Physics storeroom, humming and hugging her bundled up labcoat in her arms.
Mrs Khan, who was covering the lesson, was busy helping with Jess, who was on crutches.
Emli spread her finds out along the bench, smiling.
Azella leant round Ros, and poked the heap of wires and electronicky bits.
Emli slapped her hand away. “Delicate. Heat sensor.”
“That is not your coursework,” Ros whispered.
“Nope.”
“What is it, then?” Azella demanded.
Emli grinned, her blue eyes wide and happy. “Boom.”
Ros hated science.
5. shooting stars, fireflies and fairies for
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
“A shooting star!” cried Wolf, pointing over the station roof.
“It’s an aeroplane,” Emli said, rolling her eyes. Even for a boy, he was stupid.
“Is not.”
“Is too.”
“It’s not blinking. Aeroplanes blink.”
The woman sitting on the other end of the bench bent down. “Actually, dears, it’s a firefly. Why don’t you make a wish?”
“Why?” Emli asked, eyeing her suspiciously. Was she one of the Dark?
“Because fireflies are really fairies in disguise, and fairies love making nice little girls' wishes come true.”
Wolf snorted into his fist. Emli sighed. Grown ups were even stupider than boys.
*shakes finger at various people* Honestly.
