The survivors of the Ninth all tend to be absolutist about the Dark. Given how many of the people Nimbus loved were killed by the Dark, he's not likely to feel forgiveness. The five most important people in Nimbus' life were his sister Sofia, Maria, Devon, Lia and Aylili. Sofia died when he was a kid and you know about the others.
People do defect sometimes, but Sphinx isn't likely to. Like Nimbus, she's lost too much.
