(Sorry to be spamming everyone - I'm bored out of my brain having a creative day.
I'm afraid I cheated a bit on most of these - they're drabbles and a half, ie. 150 words exactly. Ironically, Tad's is the only one that I could keep to 100 words.
Tiger, birds, unicorn toy, for
shanra, 150 words
The seagull soared in over the rough sea, wings arched. Tiger watched it, and tried not to see the wreckage tumbled by the waves, or the way the water lapped into the buildings.
Raven put her hand on her shoulder, and murmured, “Look.”
Altair was sitting against the wall, amongst those they’d managed to rescue. His cloak was wrapped around a boy beside him, and he was cradling a sleeping girl. Locked in her arms was a toy unicorn, as big as she was, with a silver mane and a plastic horn as long as Tiger’s hand..
He saw them looking, and winced. I swear that thing was trying to hurt me. It got me in the eye three times as I was coming up the stairs.
Raven smirked. You’re obviously not a maiden true and pure.
They all laughed. Then Tiger drew Raven away to discuss the clean-up operation.
Tad, ponies, for
shanra, 100 words
Tad was in love (again).
Things were going well. Eliara was clever, kind, and funny (and found him funny). His parents liked her. His sisters liked her. She might not be Saisorhi, but she was beautiful.
Now he was finally visiting her homeworld. He left the worldgate, shivering at the blast of wind. There wasn’t a soul in sight – merely brown moorland stretching into the misty distance.
“We have to ride,” Eliara said. “I love ponies.”
Tad wasn’t convinced.
A wing-twitch, a bolted pony and several broken pinions later, he realised that the path of true love ne’er ran smooth.
Sparrow, rubber duck, for
saiena, 150 words - set during Perseus when these two have to stay together.
Sparrow glanced in the mirror to check her costume was concealed under her clothes.
There was a rubber duck sitting on her shower shelf.
It was luminous yellow, and she couldn’t quite shake off the feeling that its painted eyes were watching her.
“Erikson!”
First his toothbrush, then he starts feeding the cockroaches, and now a bloody bath toy. Next thing I know, he’ll refuse to move out.
Percy appeared in the doorway, grinning.
She pointed.
“I see you’ve met Mr Quackers.”
“You,” she said precisely, “are insane.”
“Where’s your sense of fun?”
“In the same place you left your common sense.”
He guffawed.
She narrowed her eyes at him. Was there nothing she could do to annoy him?
Inspiration struck. “Fun, right?”
“Remember it?”
“I think Mr Quackers would have more fun at sea.”
“What?”
She grabbed the duck and ran for the stairs. “Catch me if you can.”
Lynx, slinky, for
saiena, 150 words
Lynx hurried between the old warehouses, squinting into the low sun. She appreciated these summer evenings – they made it easier to keep a lid on the Warren.
She needed to deal with the police again, and get the boys to deal with the broken swings, and arrange something unpleasant for the dealers down at Frilsey Wharf. Damn, it never-
Something rattled down a fire esacpe in front of her.
She tensed.
A rainbow slinky flopped off the bottom step.
She picked it up, glancing up.
Her daughter grinned down at her, displaying the gap where her front teeth had been last week.
“You should be at home.”
Wolf appeared. “The sun’s shining!”
“And it’s past your bedtime.”
“Just once more,” Emli begged.
Lynx started to refuse, and then hesitated. The slinky popped out of her hands, reappearing by Emli’s feet.
“Once more,” she said, “and then we’ll all go home.”
Aylili, large magnet, for
ladylight, 150 words - Eridille is an important character who will be appearing in the third of these stories.
“I’ve been working on it for weeks,” Dilly said, waving at the huge, metal-studded statue in the middle of the workshop. “It’s been hard to get the calibration right – I don’t want it to bring back men in armour.”
Aylili nodded gravely and tilted her head in query. Why was she here?
“I need someone discreet to test it on. Draw your sword.”
Oh, no. Aylili unbelted her sword and put it on the floor. She crossed her arms.
“Please,” coaxed Dilly.
No. If Dilly wanted to test her magnetic golem, she could-
Oh.
Aylili grinned. Then she threw her head back and screamed.
Nimbus burst through the door, a sword gripped tightly in each hand. “Featherling! Fear not! I shall-”
Dilly activated the golem.
“Saaaaavargh!”
The golem lumbered forward with Nimbus, and his swords, glued limply to its chest.
“Excellent!” Dilly said. “We’ll restock our armoury in no time.”
Sphinx, Tiger, not enough rain, for
ladylight, 150 words
Sirini let the sand slip through her fingers, watching it dance away on the wind, ash-bright. The sun pounded against her neck, always too hot.
Soft footsteps sounded behind her.
“We’re running out of time,” Tiger said wearily.
Sirini looked up at her, a solid silhouette against the burning light. “It was too late when the rain stopped falling.”
“We can still evacuate the planet. Will you authorise your people to help?”
Sirini stood, shrugging. “Why should I?”
“Because the people here are no use to either of us dead.”
“You grow cold in your old age.”
She saw how Tiger’s mouth twisted into a smile. “I always was.”
Sirini looked at her, and the vast sweep of desert where there had once been forests. Above them the dying sun raged, filling the sky with leprous light.
“And you claim,” she said softly, “that the Dark is cruel.”
Tiger flinched.
